We are so excited that the Rockwall Dog Park is open! Like many of you, we had been waiting for something like this to be available for Rockwall pet owners. There have been a number of parks in Dallas for years, but it's so nice to have something close to home finally!
When you're taking your dog to a new environment where there will be new "friends", it's always important to be prepared.
Here's a few helpful hints for your first visit:
- Visit the park during "off-peak" hours. This way there will be less dogs in the park, and less reason for your pet to feel threatened.
- Don't bring your dogs favorite toy. All the dogs in the park will want to play with the toy, and your dog may become protective of it.
- Always keep an eye on your dog while in the park. If he/she begins to act aggressively, be sure to quickly attend to the situation. You may need to remove your dog from the park in order to calm him/her down.
- When entering the park, quickly move away from the entrance and fence. Other dogs will approach your dog right away, and being far from the fence will help him/her to not feel threatened or cornered.
- It's good for your dog to be reliably trained before going to the park. The most important command is the "recall". This is calling your dog to come back to you. This will save you from chasing him/her around the park when you're ready to leave.
- Most importantly: Do not bring aggressive dogs to the dog park!
We hope that you and your dog have a great time this Summer at the park! Remember to check the parks website for any rules/restrictions they might have.
